Quick answer

Trip cancellation happens before departure, travel delay affects the carrier's departure or arrival, and curtailment happens after a trip has started and you need to return early. Each benefit has different causes, timing rules, limits and evidence.

For Allianz Travel XPert, a qualifying travel delay needs at least five full consecutive hours and written carrier verification. Cancellation covers listed causes, not a change of mind. Read the trigger before you assume an extra cost is claimable. If Travel XPert is on your shortlist, use the quote flow after identifying the benefit that matters so the displayed option is tied to your actual trip details.

The three claims sit at different points in the trip

Think of the trip as a line:

  • Cancellation: you do not start the journey.
  • Travel delay: the common carrier's departure or arrival is delayed, rescheduled, rerouted or cancelled.
  • Curtailment: the journey has started, but a covered event makes you interrupt it or return home early.

The same event can affect your plans in different ways, but you must use the benefit that matches what happened and follow its conditions.

Cancellation needs a listed cause and early purchase

The policy covers certain non-recoverable prepaid accommodation, transport and excursion costs when a journey is cancelled before it starts. Listed causes include the death of you, a family member or travelling companion within 60 days before the scheduled departure; hospital confinement of you, a family member or travelling companion on the departure date because of injury or serious illness; your illness or injury certified in writing as making you unfit to travel; serious illness or injury of a family member scheduled to travel with you, certified as making that family member unfit to travel; compulsory Covid-19 quarantine or isolation of you or your travelling companion on the departure date because of a Covid-19 diagnosis; serious damage to your home; or a natural disaster at the destination that prevents departure and occurred within one month before the scheduled departure.

It is not a refund for changing your mind, a cheaper fare becoming available or a work schedule changing.

Timing matters. The policy says the benefit is unavailable if the policy is purchased and paid for less than seven days before departure. It is also unavailable if the policy is bought and paid for after a listed incident has commenced, occurred or been announced.

For overseas cover, the Schedule of Benefits lists cancellation up to RM25,000 under Classic and RM35,000 under Prestige. Domestic cancellation has a different limit. Compare the amount with your unrecoverable booking costs and keep the cancellation and refund confirmations.

Travel delay is a fixed benefit after the carrier trigger

The policy requires a delay of at least five full consecutive hours based on the confirmed carrier booking. It considers the longer duration between the departure and arrival delay. The common carrier or handling agent must provide written verification showing the scheduled and actual times.

The overseas benefit is RM300 for each five-hour block, up to RM3,000 for Classic and RM4,500 for Prestige. Domestic cover is RM100 for each five-hour block, up to RM1,500. If the carrier moves the scheduled departure to an earlier date or time, the policy states a lump sum of RM100 for domestic trips or RM300 for overseas trips, subject to written verification from the carrier or its handling agent.

This benefit is not an open-ended expense account. The wording excludes additional costs such as buying a new ticket or paying for extra accommodation under the travel-delay benefit. Keep the carrier letter even if the delay feels obvious from the airport board.

Curtailment begins after departure

Curtailment covers an interruption or early return after the journey has begun because of specified events. Examples include your or your travelling companion's death, injury or serious illness; an unexpected family death; a family member's hospital admission for more than 48 hours after an accident or illness; compulsory Covid-19 quarantine abroad; serious damage to your home; or a natural disaster that prevents the scheduled trip from continuing.

The policy may pay the unrecoverable unused part of the trip and the additional cost of changing or replacing the return ticket, subject to its conditions and limits. If it pays for a changed or new return ticket, it does not also pay the unused return ticket charges.

For overseas cover, the published curtailment limit is up to RM25,000 for Classic and RM35,000 for Prestige. The actual claim still depends on the cause, proof, timing and the expenses that the wording allows.

Three hypothetical situations

Situation 1: before departure. A traveller's parent dies within the period specified in the policy, and the airline and hotel will not refund the prepaid bookings. This may be a cancellation question, subject to the policy's family-member definition, timing and documents.

Situation 2: at the airport. A common carrier cancels a flight and gives a written record showing the original and replacement times. If the resulting delay reaches the policy trigger, this is a travel-delay question. It does not automatically reimburse a new ticket or hotel.

Situation 3: during the holiday. A traveller is certified unfit to continue after an illness and has to move the return flight. This may be a curtailment question, subject to the medical certification, unused costs and return-ticket terms.

These are hypothetical situations to show the categories. They do not predict whether a particular claim will be accepted.

Keep the evidence for the matching benefit

Keep the booking confirmation, the cancellation or refund confirmation, carrier delay letter, medical report, receipts and proof of relationship where relevant. The policy asks for written notice of a claim within 30 days after you return home and can ask for further proof.

Once you know whether cancellation, delay or curtailment is the risk you are comparing, start with Henry's Allianz Travel XPert quote link. Enter your trip details, then compare the quote with the triggers above before payment. It is a practical way to see what is available for your trip, but it does not guarantee that a future event will meet a benefit trigger or that an expense will be reimbursed.

Frequently asked questions

Does trip cancellation cover a change of mind?
No. The policy lists covered causes and requires the other conditions to be met. A personal change of plans is not automatically a covered cancellation.
How many hours of delay are needed?
The current wording requires at least five full consecutive hours, with written verification from the common carrier or its handling agent.
Does travel delay pay for a replacement ticket and hotel?
The travel-delay section says it will not pay additional costs such as buying a new ticket or additional accommodation. Other benefits can have different rules, so match the expense to the right section.
Can I claim both the unused return ticket and the replacement ticket under curtailment?
The policy says it will not pay the unused return-ticket charges when it pays the cost of changing the return ticket or buying a new return ticket. Check the full wording and keep the carrier records.
