Quick answer
If your gross basic monthly salary is RM6,000–RM9,999, the first Budget 2027 question is your chargeable income, not a salary-based tax rate.
Individual and dependent relief is proposed to rise from RM9,000 to RM12,000. The RM70,001–RM100,000 and RM100,001–RM150,000 chargeable-income bands are proposed at 18% and 24%. Other proposed relief expansions cover family care, medical, education, lifestyle and sports expenses.
Whether you actually pay less depends on chargeable income, other income, qualifying evidence and tax already payable. SARA MADANI, MediAsas and first-home support are separate eligibility and affordability questions.
Who this guide is for
This guide covers RM6,000–RM9,999 in gross basic monthly salary before bonuses, commissions and other income. It is not a tax band: monthly salary multiplied by 12 is not automatically chargeable income.
| Budget measure | How to read it |
|---|---|
| RM12,000 individual and dependent relief | Reduces chargeable income; it is not an extra RM3,000 cash |
| 18% band | Applies to the relevant RM70,001–RM100,000 chargeable-income band |
| 24% band | Applies to the relevant RM100,001–RM150,000 chargeable-income band |
| Other relief expansions | Match them to real spending and qualifying evidence |
| SARA MADANI | The Budget proposes RM100 in two payments for eligible non-STR citizens aged 18 and above |
| MediAsas and first-home support | Compare long-term cover and instalments, not only one-off savings |
1. RM8,000 a month is not automatically RM96,000 of chargeable income
Monthly salary multiplied by 12 is only a rough gross-income starting point. EPF, SOCSO, bonuses, other income, household information and tax reliefs affect chargeable income.
Budget 2027 proposes increasing individual and dependent relief from RM9,000 to RM12,000 from Year of Assessment 2027. If the additional RM3,000 falls within an 18% band, the theoretical saving is about RM540. If taxable income or tax payable is lower, the actual result is lower.
Use final Ministry of Finance and HASiL legislation, guidance and filing treatment when filing. Do not treat a maximum Budget illustration as your personal tax outcome.
2. The 18% and 24% bands apply only to the relevant portions
The Budget proposes:
- 18% for the RM70,001–RM100,000 chargeable-income band; and
- 24% for the RM100,001–RM150,000 chargeable-income band.
Tax is calculated progressively. If your chargeable income is RM90,000, the 18% rate is relevant to that band, not a flat 18% applied to the entire amount. A higher salary also does not guarantee access to a band if deductions leave chargeable income below it.
3. Other reliefs: connect them to real spending and keep evidence
The Budget proposes broader relief for care of parents and grandparents, postpartum care, sports shoes, education and skills training, AI software subscriptions, pet adoption from registered shelters and veterinary services.
For this salary band, parent care, children’s education and medical costs may be more material than a one-point rate change. Relief is not a reason to spend. Check the person, expense, limit, payment method and evidence before claiming.
4. SARA MADANI: higher salary does not settle eligibility
The Budget includes non-STR recipients who are Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above for two RM100 SARA MADANI payments: one ahead of Aidilfitri and one in conjunction with the 70th National Day. It is not RM100 every month, and the Budget does not confirm February and August as fixed dates.
Eligibility depends on official records and final conditions, not salary alone. Treat the support as periodic assistance rather than long-term cash flow.
5. MediAsas: identify the protection gap before considering the tax angle
MediAsas is planned for a nationwide launch in January 2027. BNM describes it as a voluntary, standalone basic medical insurance/takaful plan, with an indicative target monthly premium of about RM60–RM550. Final features and pricing must be checked at launch.
If you already have employer medical benefits or a personal medical card, list annual limits, panel hospitals, co-payment, exclusions and renewal terms before deciding whether a gap exists. Tax treatment cannot make inadequate cover adequate.
6. First-home support does not remove long-term affordability risk
For eligible Malaysian first-time buyers, sale-and-purchase agreements executed from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2030 may qualify for:
- 100% exemption on the loan agreement and instrument of transfer for homes up to RM500,000; and
- 100% exemption on the first RM500,000 and 50% on the balance for homes from RM500,001 to RM750,000.
Calculate the deposit, instalment, interest, maintenance, insurance, assessment, quit rent and emergency reserve. Stamp duty is a one-off saving, not a monthly subsidy.
What to check and when

Conclusion
For RM6,000–RM9,999 earners, the useful step is to turn salary into a clear chargeable-income and cash-flow picture, then review family care, healthcare, first-home and savings decisions. Relief can help, but it does not remove long-term affordability risk.
