Quick answer
Read an insurance policy by matching four documents: the Product Disclosure Sheet for the summary, the policy schedule for your selected details, the contract wording for the legal terms, and endorsements for later changes. A sales illustration is not a substitute for the contract.
Each document answers a different question
The Product Disclosure Sheet helps you understand the product before buying. The schedule shows the plan, insured person, amount, term and selected options recorded for you. The contract wording contains definitions, benefits, exclusions and claim conditions.
An endorsement changes or adds to the original contract. Keep it with the policy and check which clause it replaces. If the four documents appear to disagree, ask the insurer or takaful operator to clarify in writing.
Search for the words that change the outcome
Look for:
- covered event and benefit trigger
- definition of disability, illness or loss
- exclusions and waiting periods
- claim notice, proof and deadlines
- renewal, premium or contribution changes
- cancellation, surrender and reinstatement
- beneficiary and ownership details
Do not skim only the benefit amount. A definition or exclusion can determine whether the benefit applies to the event you are worried about.
Create a one-page policy map
Write the policy number, insured person, benefit, amount, payment, renewal date, key exclusion and claim contact on one page. Add the date of every endorsement. This makes an annual review faster and helps your family find the right document.
BNM describes a policy or takaful certificate as a legal contract. When a sentence is unclear, ask the provider or approved intermediary instead of relying on a summary from memory.
