Quick answer
PCB is monthly tax deducted from employment income, not the final tax bill. After you file the return, HASiL compares the final tax calculation with PCB and other credited payments. The result may be a balance payable, a refund or no further amount, depending on the full return.
PCB is a payment on account
Monthly deductions help collect income tax during the year. They do not decide the final liability because your annual income, reliefs, rebates, benefits and other facts may differ from the estimate used for payroll.
Keep the EA form, payslips and PCB record. If you changed jobs, received a bonus or had more than one employer, make sure the income and deductions from each source are included.
Follow the final calculation
The return normally moves through these questions:
- what income must be reported
- which reliefs apply
- what chargeable income remains
- how much tax is calculated
- which rebates apply
- how much PCB or other payment is credited
- whether a balance is payable or refundable
A refund can happen when credited payments exceed the final amount due, but it is not a bonus created by PCB. It is the difference after the complete calculation.
Check the refund or payment record
Review the bank details and filing confirmation used for the return. If the result differs from your expectation, compare the income, relief, rebate and PCB entries before assuming the system is wrong.
Keep the submitted return and supporting records together. When the employment pattern changes, update the calculation rather than copying the previous year.
