Quick answer

Good Malaysian tax records connect each claim to the taxpayer, assessment year, payment and supporting document. Keep receipts, statements, employer forms and payment evidence in a way that lets you explain the claim later, even when you do not submit every document with the return.

Build the record around the return

Start with the assessment year and income sources. Add the relief or deduction category, the person who paid, the amount and the document that supports it. This prevents a receipt from becoming detached from the tax claim it was meant to support.

Use the current HASiL guide for categories and limits. A receipt can be genuine and still not prove that the payment qualifies for the category selected.

A practical filing folder

Separate records into:

  • income and employer documents
  • tax relief and rebate evidence
  • donations or approved contributions where relevant
  • SSPN, PRS, insurance or EPF records where relevant
  • PCB, instalment payments and prior filing confirmations
  • correspondence about an unclear or corrected item

Name files with the year, category and payer. Keep the original digital statement where possible, not only a cropped image that hides the date or account holder.

Check the return before pressing submit

Match the number in the return to the supporting record. Check that the assessment year, taxpayer name, payment date and category agree. If a document is missing, mark the item for follow-up instead of guessing.

Read HASiL's current record-retention and filing instructions for the relevant year. Rules and electronic filing steps can change, so an old checklist is not enough.

Questions readers usually ask

Do I submit every receipt with my tax return?
Not necessarily. Keep the records and follow the current HASiL filing instructions. Be ready to produce the document if the claim needs support.
How long should I keep tax records?
Use the current HASiL guidance for the relevant return and record-retention requirement. Do not rely on an old number without checking.
What should every receipt show?
The payment, date, payer or taxpayer connection and the nature of the item should be clear enough to support the category claimed.
Can a bank statement replace a receipt?
It may help show payment, but it may not explain the item or prove eligibility. Keep the document that supports the claim itself.
What if I find an error after filing?
Check the current HASiL correction or amendment process. Keep the original return, corrected record and correspondence together.
