Quick answer
You can withdraw from Akaun Sejahtera to help pay a child's fees at an approved institution. The limit is 20% of your Akaun Sejahtera balance or RM20,000 per child, whichever is lower, and EPF pays out against whichever is lower between that limit and the fee stated on the institution's own fee statement. You apply at an EPF office with the offer letter and fee statement, and approval is not automatic.
The part most people skip past: every ringgit that leaves Akaun Sejahtera stops earning EPF dividend for your own retirement. Before you apply, it is worth checking what PTPTN, SSPN or your own savings would cost you instead.
What this withdrawal is actually for
Akaun Sejahtera is the account EPF carved out under its account restructuring, holding 15% of new contributions, and education withdrawal is one of the uses allowed from it. The money is meant for tuition and related fees at an institution EPF recognises, paid against the amount your child's offer letter and fee statement actually state. It is not a general allowance for living costs, and EPF pays out against the fee, not a round number you choose.
How much you can actually take out
| Limit | What it means |
|---|---|
| 20% of your Akaun Sejahtera balance, or RM20,000 per child | Whichever amount is lower becomes your ceiling |
| The fee stated in the offer letter or fee statement | If the fee is lower than your ceiling, EPF pays the fee, not the full ceiling |
So a parent with a healthy Akaun Sejahtera balance does not automatically get RM20,000 out. If the fee statement says RM8,500 for the semester, that is what gets paid, even if 20% of the account would allow more.
What EPF asks for before it pays
You apply at an EPF office, not online through i-Akaun, and bring the offer letter from the institution and the current fee statement. EPF reviews the application before releasing funds, and a rejected or incomplete application is not unusual if the paperwork does not match what the institution has issued. Budget a few weeks for this, not a same-day payout.
The trade-off that matters more than the paperwork
This is the part I think gets too little attention. EPF's dividend for 2025 was declared at 6.15% for both conventional and Shariah savings. Money you pull out of Akaun Sejahtera today does not earn that dividend next year, or any year after, and it does not come back on its own. Over a working life, that gap compounds into a noticeably smaller retirement balance, not just a one-time loss of RM20,000.
I would not treat this withdrawal as the default option. PTPTN carries a low fixed cost and comes with settlement discounts if you pay it down later. SSPN has its own tax relief and does not touch your retirement savings at all. Akaun Sejahtera withdrawal makes more sense as a last resort, once those routes are compared and found wanting, not as the first number you reach for when a fee statement lands.
