Quick Answer

PMI is a diffusion index built from surveys of purchasing managers and indicates the direction of business activity compared with the previous month. A reading above 50 generally signals an overall increase and below 50 an overall decrease. It is not a GDP growth rate or a forecast of stock-market returns.

Correct Interpretation and Practical Use

Start with the Core Point

PMIs may cover manufacturing, services or the whole economy, and their components and weights can differ. A reading of 52 does not mean the economy grew 2%, while 49 does not by itself confirm a recession. It summarises the direction and breadth reported by surveyed firms. One month can be affected by seasonality, delivery times and short-term events, so review the trend, sub-indices and other economic data.

How to Use This

  • Identify the PMI series, region and publisher first.
  • Review several months rather than one release.
  • Do not convert PMI directly into a stock-market trading signal.

Limitations and Trade-offs

Any indicator, rule or example offers only one viewpoint. Outcomes can change with time, fees, tax, product terms, personal cash flow and market conditions. This article preserves the original reader question but removes unsupported guarantees, universal conclusions and stale figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this method guarantee an outcome?
No. It is a tool for organising a decision, not a guarantee of returns, wealth or behavioural outcomes.
Should I rely on one number or rule?
No. At minimum, consider the goal, horizon, risk, cost, liquidity and date of the information together.
