Quick Answer

A fund distribution is not free extra return. When it is paid from fund assets, NAV per unit normally falls correspondingly. Comparing a high pre-distribution NAV with a low post-distribution NAV does not show which fund is cheaper or better. Review total return with distributions included.

Correct Interpretation and Practical Use

Core Explanation

A distribution may come from interest, dividends or realised gains, and some structures may include return of capital; check the fund reports. Changes in units, NAV and cash distributions need to be read together. A high distribution rate may simply return assets to investors and does not automatically increase wealth.

How to Use This

  • Compare total return over the same period with distributions included.
  • Check the source, policy and sustainability of distributions.
  • Do not use the absolute NAV level to decide whether a fund is cheap.
