Quick answer
Compare insurance or takaful by the financial loss it is meant to soften, not by premium alone. Check the covered event, exclusions, waiting periods, claim conditions, owner, insured person, beneficiary and whether you can keep paying after a difficult year.
Name the loss before you compare products
A protection plan is easier to judge when the risk is specific. Is it meant to replace income after death, pay hospital costs, cover a critical illness event or protect a debt? A product can be useful for one gap and irrelevant to another.
Insurance and takaful use different structures, but both need a clear benefit, a price you can maintain and terms you understand. Do not let a familiar label do the comparison for you.
Read the benefit beside the limitation
Put the following lines next to each other:
- event that triggers payment
- amount and payment recipient
- exclusions and waiting periods
- claim documents and deadlines
- owner, insured person and beneficiary
- renewal, contribution or premium conditions
The limitation is part of the product. BNM advises consumers to understand features, conditions, limitations, exclusions and benefits, and to deal with licensed or approved parties.
Test the payment in a bad year
A plan that fits only when income is smooth can lapse when it is needed. Include the payment in your household budget and ask what happens if the premium or contribution changes at renewal.
Keep the product disclosure, benefit illustration and policy or certificate wording. If the sales explanation differs from the contract, ask for clarification in writing before paying.
